Memon, a Class 10 dropout, is a resident of Nutan building in Bandra (W). His father is affiliated to a political party, said the police adding that they had arrested Memon for a similar offence two years ago.

After theft incidents in Bandra and Khar increased, policemen in plain clothes started keeping a close watch.

On Wednesday, acting on tip-off that a well-dressed man was trying to steal valuables from a parked car near Pali Hill, police reached the spot and nabbed Memon.

They recovered an Innova, several laptops, sunglasses and bags from him. Memon claims the car belonged to him, but the police are trying to verify the name under which the car is registered.

Senior Police Inspector Mangesh Pote said: “He carried a pointed instrument and screwdrivers with him. With these, he would break the windows of the car and flee with the valuables inside.”

Memon allegedly took to crime, as the money he received from his family was not sufficient to support his drugs habit. He will remain in custody until August 16.
