General Manager BEST, Uttam Khobragade introduced the BEST budget for 2010-11 to the standing committee.

He told the committee members that BEST has sent a proposal to the state government to allow them to take over TMT, a part of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC). The committee passed the budget with Rs 77 crore surplus from the last year’s budget.

On the request of corporators, Khobragade has assured to start new services on various routes in the suburban areas like Vashi and Mankhurd.

“We will see the feasibility of these new bus routes for areas where the population is growing,” Khobragade told the corporators, who demanded new bus routes.

“We also have bus services in Thane and we have sent a proposal to the state to take over the bus services there,” Khobragade added.

Currently, the TMT, part of the TMC, has more than 250 buses. Most of the fleet is old and non-functional and commuters have often complained about inefficient services. BEST currently operates inter-city services to Navi Mumbai.

Chairman of Mira-Bhayander Nagar Palika has also requested the BEST to extend services in their jurisdiction.
