Panic struck at Shivaji Park on Wednesday after two bomb hoax calls were made to the Shiv Sena Bhavan threatening that a bomb planted on the premises would go off within half an hour.
Shops near the Sena Bhavan shut down while the residents stayed in fear until the bomb call turned out to be hoax.
Sena executive president, Uddhav Thackarey was present in the building when the unidentified caller called.
Thackeray, who was on his way to attend a meeting over malaria and potholes, had dropped in at the Sena Bhavan. A senior Sena leader said that the Uddhav immediately left for mayor’s bungalow.
A number of leaders who are usually stationed at Sena Bhavan also accompanied Uddhav till the police conducted their operation and declared the building safe.
According to the Shivaji Park police the first call was received around 1.24 pm and a couple of minutes later the caller called back again. “Two hours after the search the area was declared safe as nothing was found,” said Police Inspector S. Yadav. “We will now trace the caller,” he added.
“I was scared after seeing the bomb disposal squad rushing towards the Sena Bhavan and shut down my shop fearing a bomb blast,” said Satish Tavde, owner of a retail clothing shop in Shivaji Park.
