The police registered a case against Gaikwad and an unidentified accused who had raped the girl.

The family alleged that Gaikwad would take the teenager to “work” and force her to have sex with men at various places in Powai and Andheri. During investigations, the name of then senior police inspector of LT Marg police station Arun Borude cropped up.

By the time the Powai police could summon him for interrogation in the second week of November, he had gone on leave along with his family.

The Powai police searched a flat at the Emerald Court building in Andheri next to Borude’s flat, where he was suspected to have raped the girl.

Meanwhile, the Powai police arrested two other accused in the case — realtors Mohanchand Shyam and Satyanarayan Gupta. When Borude did not turn up for questioning, the Powai police declared him absconding and the Mumbai police started looking for him.

On November 17, Borude was dismissed from the police force. He later applied for anticipatory bail that was rejected by the Sessions court first and the high court later.

On December 6, DNA tests on the samples of the girl’s premature baby sent along with those of Shyam and Gupta to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) proved the baby was Shyam’s. The police were still on the lookout for Borude when his body was found near the railway tracks in his hometown Ahmednagar on December 29.
