Bridges are quake proof, claims Railway chief

Chairman of Railway Board, Vivek Sahai, today assured that all the railway bridges in the country were strong enough to weather even earthquakes.

Chairman of Railway Board, Vivek Sahai, on Saturday assured that all the railway bridges in the country were strong enough to weather even earthquakes.

Talking to the reporters, Sahai said, "The bridges are so strong that even an earthquake or a tsunami-like situation won't affect them.

With regard to the suburban network in Mumbai, and conversion of nine coach trains into 12 coach, he said, "Our focus is to convert the existing trains into 12 coach this year and then we might go for 15 coach. After converting nine coach trains into 12 coach we have generated 33% more space for commuters."

On the central railway line, of the total 1,573 train services, 809 are now 12 coach. On the western railway line, of the 1,210 train services, only 196 are left to be converted into 12 coach.
