The maximum temperature recorded at Santacruz on Monday dipped to 28.5 degrees Celsius.

This is the lowest maximum temperature recorded in the suburbs during the month of December so far.

In Colaba, the lowest maximum temperature so far was recorded on Sunday at 28 degrees Celsius.

While Christmas Eve saw a minimum temperature of 15.8 degrees Celsius, the mercury further dipped on Sunday to 15.6 degrees Celsius.

Deputy Director General of the Indian Meteorological Department (western region), R V Sharma said, “Both the maximum and minimum temperatures are affected when the cold air comes from the north. More so, the cold northerly winds have been blowing into the city since the past two days.”

Divya Jagwani (24), a post-production manager, who usually works in chilly air-conditioned studios, was surprised to find out that she was freezing in a non-air-conditioned studio last evening.

“Not a single AC was on, and yet I was feeling extremely cold. It was chilly during the day too, so I wore a sweater while travelling.” Jagwani plans to wear boots for New Years Eve, a rarity considering Mumbai’s usually sultry weather.

Businessman Amrit Manghnani (26) cancelled his holiday plans to a cooler place because “the weather is so awesome in Mumbai.”

He added, “I love dressing in winter wear such as scarves and crews (warm tee shirts) but I usually look silly wearing it here. Now, I have a valid reason to.”

However, in what might be a dampener to those gearing up for a cold new year, Sharma added, “We are expecting temperatures to rise in the next few days, at least by a few degrees.”
