Busy afternoon for doctors: Parents welcome babies on auspicious day

On Wednesday, gynaecologists around the city were busy catering to a large number of requests for planned deliveries on December 12, 2012. Nidhi Varma reports.

On Wednesday, gynaecologists around the city were busy catering to a large number of requests for planned deliveries on December 12, 2012. At Powai's Dr LH Hiranandani Hospital, doctors attended to 7 requests for C-section deliveries from would-be parents.

Dr Soni added that many of the mothers had the option of choosing a later delivery date, but decided to do the surgery on December 12. Doctors said that the parents who asked for a Wednesday surgery believed that the day was an 'auspicious' one for a baby to be born. "When I get pregnant patients for consultation, many of them seek advice in numerology and astrology while planning birth. Many religious people consider 12.12.12 to be an auspicious day," said Dr. Anjali Talwalkar from Kohinoor Hospital, Kurla, where one such planned birth took place.

Naela Rafeeq, the mother of a healthy baby boy delivered at Kohinoor Hospital had similar reasons for scheduling her delivery on Wednesday. She said, "My surgery was to happen on last Friday but we decided to deliver the baby on this amazing date."

At Fortis Hospital in Vashi, where 8 C-Sections were conducted. Infact, a boy was born at 12 minutes past 12 in the afternoon. The baby was immediately named 'Harmoney'. "It is an extremely lucky day for us," said Kevin, the father.

Fortis Hospital at Mulund and S L Raheja at Mahim conducted one such delivery each. Of the 8 babies at Vashi's Fortis Hospital, five were girls.
