Under the theme of ‘Independence to all creatures’, the campaign will also focus against buying of animals such as turtles and tortoise.

“It is best to educate children at a young age and dissuade them from practising cruelty against animals,” said Nilesh Bhanage, founder, Paws. Paws will start its campaign on Saturday from Sarvodaya Vidyalaya and Sumantai Patil Junior College in Nilje near Dombivli. The NGO plans to screen the film — Beauty without cruelty— as a part of the campaign.

The trade of birds and animals protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, is carried out freely in areas such as Crawford Market. “Most birds are either seriously injured or die due to suffocation in transit,” Bhanage added. With the increasing trend of owning tortoise and turtles and a lack of knowledge among owners about the species, animals suffer from various health ailments.
