Chinai College moves HC over show-cause notice

The petition filed by Laxmi Charitable Trust, which runs the Chinai College and Sir MV College of Arts, Science and Commerce in Andheri, will come up for hearing in due course.

On March 12, a mob led by the National Students Union of India (NSUI), the Yuva Sena and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s students wing had vandalised the college after 156 students were barred from appearing in the exams.

The college had barred the students as they had less then 30% attendance, while the university rule makes it mandatory for students to have 75% attendance.

On March 7, the directorate of higher education issued a notice asking why the administration of the colleges should not be taken over by the government under the provisions of the Maharashtra Educational Institutions (Management) Act, 1976.

The management’s petition said it was being targeted by the Maharashtra government and the directorate of education for implementing rules framed by the Mumbai University.
