This move comes two weeks after two incidents - the murder of Pune RTI activist Satish Shetty and firing at city activist Nayana Kathpalia’s house in South Mumbai.
The group, formed on January 26, has written to Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and demanded for the accreditation and protection of bonafide activists. This, the letter reads, should be on the lines of the recent Doctors’ Protection Ordinance, which protects doctors from attacks from patients’ families.
“We are hoping to form a kind of a support system for each other. In case of any attacks we will be united,” said Viren Shah, proprietor of Roopam stores and member of the group.
“The group, which has about 30 members, hopes to see at least 100 activists,” he added.
