Thieves on the Kolhapur-Gondiya Maharashtra Express did not spare even the wife of Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan. Satvasheela Chavan has lodged a complaint with the Manmad railway police that she lost her purse and two mobile phones in the train on Saturday night. The purse reportedly had Rs40,000 in cash.
According to sources close to the Chavans, Satvasheela took the train from Karad on Saturday evening to visit a medical college in Jalgaon. She was travelling in one of the air-conditioned two-tier coaches.
Satvasheela found that her purse was missing when the train reached Manmad junction in Nashik district on Sunday morning. Sources said the two police guards accompanying her were caught unawares. The guards contacted the railway police in Manmad, where Satvasheela lodged a formal complaint. She then proceeded to Jalgaon as scheduled.
Following the complaint, police dialled Satvasheela’s stolen mobile phones. A person picked up the phone, only to switch them off later, said sources.
The chief minister played down the incident when the media persons asked him about it. “It is a minor issue,” he said.
