The accused, both 22 years old, are residents of Govandi. According to the Bandra police, the student, Snehal Jethe, was walking down Hill Road around 10pm with her family after attending the fair, when the duo, started following her on their motorbike.

The bikers, Zulfikar Shaikh and Mohammed Mohsin Qureshi, thought they would take advantage of the fact that the street was teeming with people owing to the fair, snatch her bag and then flee, the police said. When Jethe reached a crowded spot, they slowed down near her, snatched her handbag and tried to speed away.

When Jethe raised an alarm, constable Charanshankar Kharat attached to the Bandra police station, who had been deployed there owing to the fair, noticed the fleeing bikers and chased them down on foot.

“After a chasing them for a few meters, Kharat managed to intercept them at the turning near the Khoja florist on Hill Road. He then brought them to the Bandra police station,” said Ramchandra Dhawala, senior inspector, Bandra police station.

The police have registered a case of robbery under section 392 of the IPC against the duo and the purse has been returned to the girl. The police have also seized the bike.

The police are checking of Shaikh and Qureshi have a criminal record.
