Cops come on TV to warn youth about drugs

In a first, the Anti Narcotics Cell (ANC) tied up with the electronic media to raise awareness about the ill-effects of drug use. As part of the narcotics awareness fortnight, talk shows and interviews with senior ANC officials were relayed on Doordarshan and Aakashwani.

The officials said this was the first time they decided to use the electronic media to reach out to people as against using the traditional medium. The ANC had also approached other channels which, despite showing initial interest, did not follow through.

“In the capsules relayed, top ANC officials spoke about drug abuse and the ill-effects of addiction. These programmes were relayed through the fortnight starting June 26 in which callers participated as well. We did get a decent response in the 20minute programmes,” said D Kale, assistant commissioner of police (ANC).

The capsules will be relayed for a few more days.ANC officials also covered around 40 educational institutions, including private and municipal schools and colleges in Mumbai where they interacted with students.

“During the awareness sessions, we showed them educational short films along with photos of those persons who ruined their lives because of addiction. There were posters and other written material that were distributed,” said Kishore Jadhav, deputy commissioner of police (ANC).
