Eight police teams and 40 police officials worked round the clock, revisiting records of over 75 criminals from the west region, to zero in on Mohammad Ansari alias Badshah, 30, who was arrested on Tuesday on charges of raping and robbing a Spanish national at knifepoint in her Bandra residence.
After the victim filed the complaint, the police said they obtained his physical description from her and studied his modus operandi to figure out who had committed the crime.
“It takes courage to break into a building manned by a guard by jumping over a 10-feet-high wall, to climb up its length, enter someone’s home and commit rape. A novice can’t do it,” said an official, requesting anonymity.
“Our investigation suggested that his primary motive was theft and that he raped the victim as he got the opportunity; we knew he was a criminal who had a history of similar crimes and started scanning records of history sheeters booked in cases of theft,” the official said.
The police then narrowed down their list of suspects to five criminals, who employed similar modus operandi.
“Then we matched description and narrowed it down to Ansari. He was then picked up from his Reay Road home for interrogation,” said the official.
“He has fresh scratch marks on his hands, abrasions caused after he jumped over the barbed wires on the rear wall of the victim’s building,” said another official. “And the victim identified him from his photo.”
The police said they have not yet recovered the victim’s valuables, which is worth Rs. 35,000.
The police are now working to build up a strong case for which they need to corroborate the medical, forensic and circumstantial evidence. “There are footprints and fingerprints in the house that need to be matched with Ansari’s, apart from the DNA, his cellphone location has to be matched, and the knife used has to be recovered,” the official said.
