After announcing that it will reserve a third of the space in local trains for women, Central Railway (CR) is now considering placing all the women’s compartments together at one end of the train.
“Being together will make the women feel more secure. We are therefore considering altering the coach composition in 15-car rakes by assembling all ladies coaches together at the north end,” said Subodh Jain, CR general manager (GM), who met representatives from the women passengers’ association on Friday.
“Initially, this will only be in the 15-car rakes, but gradually, we will consider extending it to 12-car rakes as well.”
On women’s day, CR had said it would increase the proportion of ladies coaches from four to five in 15-car rakes. This will come into effect with the introduction of the second 15-car rake on the line, which is likely to be announced soon.
“The women’s groups demanded more ladies specials between CST and Karjat, but instead of more ladies specials, senior railway officials have decided to change the order of the compartments instead.
“Instead of introducing more ladies special trains, we offered to change the 15-car rake composition and give more space to women passengers, which the group accepted immediately,” said Jain.
Following this, the CST-Karjat section may get more 15-car services.
“Now, we will discuss with MRVC to convert platforms at stations beyond Kalyan like Badlapur, Ambernath, Neral and Karjat to accommodate 15-car trains instead of 12-car ones,” added Jain.
The implementation of this change composition will be considered for 12-car rakes as well, depending on public response.
