A highly placed source in the crime branch of Mumbai police, who is privy to the investigation into the murders of Khan and five members of her family in February last year, allegedly by her stepfather Parvez Tak, told HT on Friday that the starlet’s close ties with a fugitive gangster are emerging during the probe.

“Laila was in touch with many businessmen in the Gulf, who have known underworld links. How was it possible for a woman from a humble background to develop such connections?” the source asked, adding that many people in her circle, including her mother Celina Patel, had links with the particular fugitive.

The police are now probing if the gangster, who is well-connected in Bollywood, had played any role in giving Khan a foothold in B-town, and her sister Azima in the modelling world.
