The police apprehended a wanted criminal on Monday, chased him for more than half-an-hour, but he gave them a slip and vanished into thin air. The police fired rounds in the air while the accused pelted stones on the police team to avoid being caught.
The Meghwadi police received a tip-off in the morning about a wanted criminal Hafeez Altaf Shaikh being spotted in Meghwadi area of Jogeshwari (West). Shaikh has nine cases of theft, robbery, threatening and assault registered against him. He had been arrested in seven cases but was wanted in two cases of assault registered against him at Meghwadi police station.
Acting swiftly on the information, the police team arrived at the spot and saw Shaikh, who is also known as ‘Ninety’ as he runs at a very high speed, and tried to apprehend him.
“On seeing the police team, he started pelting stones, which injured two policemen. Shaikh then ran towards the terrace and pulled out a revolver. But before he could fire at us, we fired three rounds. He jumped from roof to another, before running away,” said Prakash Mutyal, deputy commissioner of police (Zone X).
