Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sanjay Barve said the high court’s setting aside of the 25-day term of a man held for drink driving would not affect the campaign. “We still have a zero-tolerance policy towards drink driving,” he said.
Police have identified spots like Gateway of India, Marine Drive, beaches and hotels where large crowds would congregate, resulting in slow-moving traffic on December 31. Diversions will be enforced to ensure smooth flow of traffic.
The traffic police would deploy 250 officers and 2,600 personnel on the roads from 7 pm on December 31. “We have identified other spots like Marine Drive, Worli Seaface, the Bandra-Worli Sealink approach road, Carter Road and Haji Ali to put up nakabandis to track anti-national elements, speedsters and drunk drivers,” said Barve.
Policemen will be armed with speed guns. “Barricades and ‘speed arresters’ have been placed on the highways. The sealink will have cat eyes and rubber rumblers to prevent speeding,” Barve said.
The regulations would be in force from 6 pm on December 31 till 6 am the next morning.
