Kunal Gandhi, a resident of Navsari district of Gujarat was in Mumbai and met the accused Akbar Ibrahim Khan (73), who told him that his wife works with the Consulate. As Gandhi wanted to go to America, he fell for Khan’s claims.

A police official from Mumbai Central GRP said, “On Tuesday, Khan drove Gandhi to US Consulate and took Rs 6,000 from him for clearing his passport and visa and absconded.”

“We nabbed Gandhi in Andheri posing as clients,” said Police Sub-Inspector M.C. Sheikh. Khan, who is always in uniform, told the police that he gets a pension of Rs 900 a month that was not enough.

Khan used to stay and sleep either on the Mumbai Central platform or footpaths, the police said.
