Three men posing as policemen duped a senior citizen and made away with gold ornaments worth Rs1.2 lakh in Bandra on Monday. Sixty-six-year-old Mehrunisa Abdul Rahim Aagha, a resident of Aashiana building at Bandra West, was on her way home when the trio, who posed as cops, approached her near Langdana Lane on Baroda Road.
The men ‘warned’ Aagha about a steep increase in incidents of theft, and told her it was not safe to walk around wearing expensive jewellery. The trio asked her to remove her gold ornaments and put them in a handkerchief so that they were safe.
Taking the men for well-meaning policemen, Aagha followed the instructions without realising that the ornaments had been swiftly replaced with stones. Aagha then collected the handkerchief from the men and went home, assuming that her jewellery was safely tucked in. Only after reaching home, Aagha realised that she had been duped. She then approached the Bandra police and lodged a case with them.
“We have registered a case of cheating and theft against the three unknown persons. They made away with four gold bangles and a gold chain, collectively worth Rs1.2 lakh. We are trying to identify the accused,” said Samad Shaikh, senior police inspector with the Bandra police station.
