The fire brigade has now been equipped with thermal imaging cameras and three-layered fire resistant suits. "The fire brigade's recent purchases include 100 bullet-proof jackets, a power-operated chain saw, hosepipes and a small fire tender," said Chief Fire Officer Uday Tatkare.
The civic body is recruiting 192 firemen and 39 assistant fire station officers.
New regional command centres have been opened in Mumbai at a cost of Rs 66.46 crore. Seventeen new fire engines will also be procured.
The department has also procured remote controlled water monitors and a remote-controlled 70-metre snorkel and cage unit. It is also developing communication systems to improve response time and coordination.
It will introduce advanced communications systems like radio trucking and the Terrestrial Truncked Radio Access system (TETRA) and personal protection equipment.
The total cost of the project will be Rs 12 crore.
The fire brigade trained citizens to use fire extinguishers and to systematically vacate a room in a crisis.
