MUMBAI: For the first time, a cadaver heart was donated at a public hospital in the city. On Saturday, a 49-year-old Vikhroli woman’s organs were donated at the municipal KEM Hospital in Parel. The donor, Shaila Shirgaonkar, was admitted to the hospital on May 22 after she fell off a bike near Parel.
The donor’s family consented to donate her organs. The heart was ferried through a 25km green corridor which was created between Parel and Mulund. Within 20 minutes the heart reached Fortis Hospital in Mulund. The heart was transplanted into a 50-year-old woman. The liver was transplanted into a 56-year-old woman from Borivli. This is the 23rd cadaver donation in the city, according to the Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee.
