Superintendent of Police (SP), Thane (rural) Vishwas Nangre-Patil said five persons were injured, three stalls ransacked and five motorcycles set on fire. The autorickshaw driver, identified as Dalvi, has been arrested while no one has been booked at the time of going to the press.

“We have apprehended the autorickshaw driver for assaulting the priest. However, we are yet to arrest anyone,” Nangre-Patil said.

The police said the rickshaw driver and the priest got into an argument over the fare. It took an ugly turn after the rickshaw driver slapped the priest.

Trouble ensued after some bystanders and passersby recognised the priest and the matter soon turned violent.

The police said the mob assumed that the rickshaw driver belonged to a different community. The situation is under control and the police are probing who instigated the mob.
