The proposal was discussed in the meeting of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) on Thursday.

The decision has been taken following a high court directive. While hearing a public interest litigation filed by one Nainesh Dolas, a divisional bench of the Bombay high court had earlier this year directed the transport department to fix the fare of private ambulances by October 31.

The fixed fares will come as relief to citizens as currently there is no control over the fees charged by ambulance operators. In several cases, relatives of patients are taken for a ride by ambulance drivers and owners, said a senior transport official.

The fare structure is yet to be finalised as MMRTA members could not reach a consensus in the meeting.
