Kulkarni said the incident occurred around 6 pm on Friday when Shiashankar Jawaharlal Gupta (19), a salesman of IDEA Cellular Limited, was going towards Mahim station.

When Gupta reached LJ Cross Road, the accused surrounded him.

“They slapped and punched Gupta. One of them took out a knife and asked Gupta to hand over his bag containing Rs 10,500, 50 SIM cards and bill books,” added Kulkarni.

The police said that while the robbers were running away with the bag, residents and the victim started chasing them.

Meanwhile, one of the residents informed the Mahim police station about the incident.

“A mobile police van, which was patrolling near KJ Khilnani School, immediately rushed to the spot. Two police constables and residents managed to catch Pallani Swami (one of the accused) in Sonapur agiary lane after chasing him for fifteen minutes while his associates managed to escape,” said Kulkarni.

In the next four hours, the other three accused were arrested from Dharavi.

The police are verifying the past records of the accused. The stolen goods and cash have been recovered from them.
