Three hours, four gold chains and chain snatchers in the city have raked in loot worth Rs2.57 lakh. There were four cases of chain snatching reported in a span of three hours on Friday in various parts of Mumbai.
Only one of the four women robbed was fortunate enough to get their jewellery back. While the incidents are rampant, the detection rate is dismal with only 130 of the 468 cases of chain snatchings, reported till October 2012, being solved.
The first incident was reported at around 5.25pm in Vile Parle (east) after 49-year-old housewife Sunita Panchal’s chain was snatched while she was walking towards the junction of Subhash Road and Tejpal road. The two accused whisked by Panchal on a bike and the pillion rider snatched her gold mangalsutra worth Rs50,000. The duo fled from the scene. However, Panchal noted part of the bike’s registration number.
In the second incident, at Sahar road near Bandra junction signal in Vile Parle (east) at around 7.20pm, accused Rajendra Kamble, 48, made away with gold chain worth Rs. 70,000. The Vile Parle police said that Pravina Thombre, 29, was seated on a two-wheeler with her friend, when Kamble blocked their way and snatched her gold chain.
Kamble was arrested within hours with the help of the description given by Thombre and the stolen booty was recovered. The third incident that took place at Marine Drive at around 7.30pm. Two men on a bike snatched a chain worth Rs13,000 from Suman Pawar, 65, and fled.
The Marine Drive police said that Pawar was walking over the footpath at NS Road, when the accused approached her and snatched her mangalsutra.
In Santacruz, at around 8.05pm a man in his early twenties targeted Jaicy Pawsh, 37. The Vakola police said that Pawsh was walking towards her residence when the unknown accused slapped her on the neck and snatched the gold chain amounting to Rs 1.24lakh and fled the scene. A case of robbery has been registered in each case.
