The Goregaon police are looking for a person, who allegedly broke into a house and a godown near the station in the early hours of Tuesday morning and robbed cash and valuables worth more than Rs 4 lakh. The police said the incident took place between 2am and 3am at Savitribai Chawl located close to Prasad Shopping Center near Goregaon (west) station.

The accused first broke into one of the two homes of 78-year-old Vithal Pawar and fled with cash and valuables, police said. The thief then broke into a godown located next to Pawar’s house and stole China-made watches worth more than Rs 15,000.

Pawar lives with his 70-year-old wife, Rukmani, and granddaughter Vijaya. The family had two rooms adjacent to each other, one for their valuables and the other for them to sleep in.

The family was asleep when the incident took place on Tuesday morning. The owner of the godown and the Pawars learnt about the theft only when they woke up and found the house and godown had been ransacked and valuables were missing.

The police have registered a case of house break-in and theft against an unidentified person.

“We are making inquiries to establish the identity of the accused and are trying to ascertain if someone with a criminal record is involved,” said senior inspector, Surendra Paithankar.
