Anandi Harijan, got married around eight months ago to Govindraj, 27. The couple was staying with Govindraj’s mother Sushila, 60, at Sagar Welfare society at Goregaon (West).

Anandi’s paternal uncle, Sarmogam Raju Swami, a resident of Mira Road, who is also a complainant in the case, told the police that around a month after the couple got married, Govindraj and Sushila began making monetary demands.

Anandi’s husband began assaulting her when she refused to give in to his demands, said the police. “Frustrated of being tortured every day, Anandi hanged herself on Wednesday,” said Maruti Telang, senior police inspector. Acting on the complaint registered by Swami, the police arrested Govindraj and Sushila on Wednesday night.
