A 24-year-old woman who had allegedly threatened to falsely accuse a teenager of rape over a loan repayment squabble, on Friday told the police that she had not mentioned slapping rape charges on him even once.
Ritesh Singh, 17, committed suicide earlier this week, reportedly after the accused, Jyoti Pillai threatened to register a rape case against him, if he did not repay Rs 1,000 to her. Pillai was arrested on Wednesday on charges of abetment to suicide. Pillai, currently in police custody, told the police that Singh would blow money on friends and movies.
According to Pillai’s statement, Singh had come to her house on Tuesday and was watching a movie with her brother, Ganesh. Singh saw Rs1, 000 lying on the floor and picked it up. When Pillai found the money missing, she questioned Ganesh, who told her that Singh had taken the money.
“Pillai said she then went to Singh’s residence in a fit of rage, demanding her money back, and also threatened to tell his parents, but did not threaten to file a rape case against him,” said Bhagwan Chate, senior inspector, Borivli police station. Singh’s parents, who run a small catering business, were not at home at the time of the incident.
While some of the neighbours who witnessed the incident said that Pillai had in fact threatened the 17-yr-old of falsely accusing of rape, others verified Pillai’s version and said that while she was angry and had shouted at Singh, she did not threaten to slap false charges on him.
A friend of the deceased, who did not wish to named, said that Singh, a Class 10 student might have taken the drastic step out of fear that Pillai would tell his parents that he had taken the money.
“Singh was not from a well-to-do family, but enjoyed socialising and would go for a movie every second week. From what I’ve heard, it seems that Singh had taken the money from Pillai’s house and when he threatened to inform his parents, he got scared of being reprimanded and took the drastic step.”
As soon as Pillai left Singh’s house, he reportedly went to his room and hanged himself. Based on the statement given by neighbours and his family, the police on Wednesday arrested Pillai.
