I-T officials said that along with a probe into the group's sources of income, about 18 companies that have invested in various Purti Group firms would also be probed.

The Mumbai and Pune I-T departments are conducting the probe and have already started gathering documents relating to these companies.

Officials said that as the main offices of the Purti Group are located in Nagpur, the investigation wing of the I-T office in Pune is investigating the matter.

"The Mumbai wing is investigating the city-based companies that have invested in the Purti Group," said a senior I-T official who didn't want to be named.

Some of these companies are located in Malad in the western suburbs of the city, Ghatkopar in the eastern suburbs and Mira Road, situated a few kilometres from Mumbai.
