Shopkeepers and residents of Kalbadevi’s busy Princess Street area could not stop talking about Saturday morning’s accident.
“It was tragic. It happened all in few seconds,” said Sameer Quereishi (27), a resident. “Initially, I thought it’s one of those minor accidents which keep happening. It’s only later that I realised that two people had been killed.”
Kalbadevi is among the most congested areas in Mumbai. It houses old residential builidings and wholesale and retail stores, selling around everything.
Residents say police checking for drink driving is a regular practice in their area and it was a coincidence that the police who are trying to keep a check on drunk drivers got killed by someone they were trying to stop.
Dinesh Lakhani, another eyewitness said: “ The lady [the accused] was so drunk that that even after the accident, she failed to realise what had happened. It’s her destiny that she survived the accident.”
