Shivani Singh (17), who was studying Commerce at SNDT College, lived in Jeniya Compound near Poisar in Kandivli.

On Monday evening, her mother Pushpa and aunt were out shopping, her father Virendra, an autorickshaw driver, was at work, and her twin 11-year-old brothers were out at their coaching classes.

“When they (mother and aunt) were leaving home, Shivani was watching cricket on the television,” said a relative requesting anonymity.

Police said when they returned, they found Shivani hanging from the ceiling. She was rushed to Bhagwati hospital, where she was declared dead before admission.

“She hadn’t come to the class the last 25 days,” said Manohar Singh, her teacher at the coaching class she went to.

“We can’t think of a single reason why she did this. We gave her everything she asked for. There was no pressure on her to study, since she had no plans to work later in life,” said Mahendra Singh, her uncle.

The police, who have registered a case of accidental death, did not find a suicide note . Having no obvious cause for the apparent suicide, the police are considering the possibility of a troubled romantic relationship.

“We are investigating all possible angles,” said Senior Police Inspector Anant Kenjale of Samta Nagar police station.
