Ganesh Kanojiya was arrested from Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh with the help of the UP Special Task Force (STF), crime branch sources said. He was produced before a holiday court in Mumbai on Sunday, which remanded him in police custody till October 3. Kanojiya named three others as his accomplice and the police are still looking for them.

Four men had on Tuesday murdered S Parshuraman and assaulted his wife Rajamma, 78 and made away with jewellery worth Rs. 1.70 lakh from his residence on Tuesday.

Kanojiya was held in UP on Saturday and brought to the city on a transit remand.

As per the police, one of the accused had visited S Parshuraman’s house in the Krishna Niwas building at the Chembur Gaothan, claiming to have been deputed by the fridge maintenance company.

The accused had visited the second floor residence of Parshuraman twice before committing the murder.

On Monday, he had given Rajamma a handwritten bill for repairing the fridge, which she rejected, asking for a printed bill instead. Police later found the handwritten bill in the house, and used it to track down the accused.

On Tuesday, as Kaonjiya knocked on the victim’s door, three of his accomplices were lying in wait in the staircase. As soon as Rajamma opened the door, the accused entered the flat, and assaulted Rajamma and Parshuraman. The later succumbed to the injuries he sustained. Rajamma, who was rushed to the hospital, survived.

The accused fled with jewellery worth Rs. 1.70 lakh from the residence after the murder.

The police had registered a case under IPC section 302 for murder, 307 (attempt to murder) and Ssection 392 (punishment for robbery).
Police found out that official records did not back the accused’s claim that he was a fridge mechanic. This, along with some surveillance, led them to the suspects.

Another person was detained in Jaunpur along with Kanojiya on Saturday.
