Labourer dies after iron rod falls on him

A 21-year-old labourer died after an iron girder fell on him while being offloaded from a trailor in the premises of a steel works company in Nagpada on Thursday.

A case of death due to negligence has been registered. The JJ Marg police have arrested the site supervisor and booked the contractor and other relevant persons.

Police said that the labourer, Dilip Mevalal Prasad, was working in the premises of Richardson & Crudas company, when a trailer containing iron girders was being emptied. At around 3.15 pm, while a crane was offloading the rods, one of the girders fell off the crane and hit Prasad. “The girders were heavy and Prasad died instantly,” said Shashikant Surve, senior inspector, JJ Marg police. “He was pulled out from under the girder and rushed to JJ hospital, but was declared dead on arrival,” Surve added.

Prasad’s cousin Sandeepkumar , who was working with him when the incident occurred, gave his statement to the police based on which they registered a case against the supervisor, contractor and others. They arrested supervisor Mugendra Singh and booked him for negligence.
