The police said on August 2, the police found the body of Teriamma (63), a rag picker and a footpath dweller lying in a pool of blood.

Her throat had been slit with a sharp object, the police said. The body was found on the footpath opposite Regency Hotel in Andheri (east).

The police suspected the involvement of Jammal Ahmed (24), a construction labourer as the police found several discrepancies in Ahmed’s statement when they questioned him.

On being questioned further, Ahmed admitted to have murdered Teriamma.

Police Inspector Ashok Jadhav said that on August 2, at around 1.30 am, after returning from his uncle’s residence in Virar he went near his office.

“Seeing Teriamma sleeping he tried to touch her. When she woke up, she refused to give him sexual favours,” Jadhav said.

“Agitated, Ahmed picked up a glass bottle and crashed it on the floor. Then using the pointed edge of the bottle, he slit her throat and fled from the spot,” Jadhav added.

Ahmed was arrested on August 2 on charges of murder.
