D S Jodgujari, senior police inspector of Shivaji Nagar police station said that Shaikh, a resident of Shivaji Nagar, was gambling with his friends in a vacant flat on the fourth floor of the building when the locals informed the police control room.

The gamblers fled after they saw the police enter the building. Shaikh, tried to hide in the bathroom, but when the police entered the flat, Shaikh climbed down the water pipe outside the bathroom, which had algae growth on the pipeline because of the rains.

Shaikh's hand slipped and he fell. The officers rushed Shaikh to the hospital but he was declared on arrival. “We have registered a case of accidental death,” added Jodgujari.

Shaikh’s family members, however, claim that Shaikh fell as the policemen were chasing and beating him.

“The police raided the place and forced Shaikh to climb down the pipeline because they were chasing him to beat him up,” said Nazma (22), Shaikh’s wife.
