At 5 pm, the labourers, who were working on the lift on the sixth floor, fell inside the shaft after the support wire broke, the police said.

The three were rushed to a nearby hospital where they were declared dead before admission.

Senior Police Inspector, of the NM Joshi Marg police station, Vasant Tajne said the deceased were identified as Saroj Binda (28), Naresh Kushwaho (30) and Danu Mahendradas (40).

Binda, Kushwaho and Mahendradas — they were living on the construction site — had been working at there for the last three months.

Tajne said a case of death due to negligence has been registered under Section 304 (a) of the Indian Penal Code and investigations were on.

“Primary investigations indicate that the deaths were caused due to negligence, but the police will take some

time to find out whose negligence,” said Tajne.

“It is a huge construction site. We will also take the statements of the contractor and the other people related to the construction activity,” Tajne added.
