Rajesh Ranjan and Ashwini Kumar Sharma, who were arrested on August 21 and August 23 respectively, extorted Rs50 lakh from Roshan by telling him that the CBI had registered a case against him and his family could be arrested.
Complaints received by the CBI so far suggest that the duo may have extorted over a crore of rupees, though the CBI suspects that the amount could increase as more complainants come forward. In addition to film personalities and businessmen, among those cheated were officials from the customs, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and custom house agents, all of who were promised better postings. Sharma was introduced to Roshan as a CBI officer by Rajesh Ranjan. The two then extorted money out of the film-maker, who eventually lodged a complaint with the CBI in August.
Ranjan, on Tuesday, moved a bail application before the special CBI court.
