The DB Marg police have arrested three men on charges of gang raping a 15-year-old girl near Opera House, Girgaum in Mumbai, at 12.30 am on August 1. According to the police, the girl had come to the city just a month ago. She was living with a relative and employed as a domestic help with the relative’s friend.
One of the three men charged, Venkatesh Shetty (22), allegedly knew the girl. “The girl had gone to Chowpatty once, and as she is new to the city, got lost there. Shetty was at Chowpatty at the time and offered to help her. That’s how they met.”
After their initial meeting, the police said, Shetty would follow the girl to various places. On July 31, when she was waiting at a bus stop, Shetty arrived on a bike with his friend Tayabayi Sakur (22). The two convinced her to go to Chowpatty with them and called another friend, Rikku Roy (24), whom she rode pillion with.
According to the police, the three took her to a deserted bungalow on Mathew Road, Girgaum, where Roy raped her while the other two stood guard outside. Though there was a guard outside the bungalow, he had started working there just the previous day. “They managed to convince the guard to let them in, saying they visit the spot very often,” said a police officer, who did not wish to be named.
“The girl tried to call for help but [the rapist] covered her mouth. But a taxi driver who was resting nearby had seen the three men taking her into the deserted bungalow. He informed a constable near Opera House. The police raided the bungalow and arrested the three men,” the officer added.
Suresh Hujband, senior police inspector, DB Marg police station, said, “A case of gang rape has been registered as the other two conspired in the crime. The girl has been sent to a shelter home for juveniles.”
