According to the police, Mehta, a private contractor, lives in Borivli with his wife and two sons. Mehta also has a separate home at Poonam Nagar in MIDC, Andheri, with a 24-year-old woman who works in a bar. They have a five-year-old daughter. Mehta would visit the Andheri home often.

“Nagma did not return home on Wednesday night, even after the bar’s closing time. He called her but she did not receive the calls. Mehta was drunk. In a fit of rage, he throttled his daughter,” said Rajaram Mandage, senior inspector, MIDC police station.

“He tried to sneak the child’s body out of the building, but residents noticed and alerted the police,” said an officer. Before the police reached the spot, Mehta allegedly consumed an antiseptic solution and lost consciousness. He is being treated at JJ hospital.

The police believe Mehta was planning to dump the child’s body on the road, to stage an accidental death. They are waiting to record Mehta’s statement, to confirm this theory. The child too was taken to hospital, but declared dead on arrival. “A case of murder has been registered and further investigations are on,” said Mandage.
