Firm on its stance to back a long-standing Dalit demand, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Thursday said the party would take up the issue of renaming Dadar station as Chaityabhoomi. It is one of the 41 demands made in the charter presented on the party’s foundation day earlier this month.

“NCP chief Sharad Pawar will lead a delegation to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh,” said party spokesperson Prakash Binsale. Similarly, state party president Madhukar Pichad will lead a state delegation to meet chief minister Prithviraj Chavan.

The NCP will also demand allotment of 12.5-acre land at Indu Mills to construct an international memorial for Dr BR Ambedkar.

The move to woo Dalits is being seen as a damage-control exercise after its former ally, the Republican Party of India (RPI), joined hands with the Shiv Sena.

NCP sources said the renaming demand was a bid to checkmate Ramdas Athawale who had made this demand during the regime of the saffron combine in Maharashtra.
