One dead, 11 swim to safety after fishing boat capsizes in Thane

A fishing boat capsized in the Bhayander creek on Saturday in which one person drowned while 11 others swam to safety, the district rural police said.

Police said around a dozen fishermen from Uttan in Bhayander had set out in the boat,'Tiranga', when they were hit by strong winds.

One of the fishermen panicked and jumped into the water and was swept away. The boat later capsized but the 11 fishermen on board swam to safety.

The body of the person who jumped into the creek was located 200 km away at Suptodi, the police said, and added that he was yet to be identified.

The Bhayander police who are conducting the investigation have registered a case of accidental death.
