According to the police, Ashafunissa Khan stayed with her mother Jannutanissa (27) and father, Naim Khan (32), a coconut water seller, at Qureshi Nagar in Bhandup (West).

At 10.30 am on Thursday, the police received a call from doctors of Agarwal Hospital in Bhandup who informed them that a girl was brought by a couple but was declared dead on arrival.

The doctors told the police, the girl had assault marks on her neck. Based on the doctors’ information, the police detained Ashafunissa’s parents.

Khan claims he was not at home when the girl died. In her statement Jannutanissa said that at 7 am, Khan left for work and at 8.30 am she noticed Ashafunissa was lying still in bed and looked unwell. She called Khan and informed him their daughter was unwell and needed to be rushed to a hospital. The couple then took Ashafunissa to the hospital where she was declared dead.

“We have registered a case of murder and have detained the couple. We are now trying to find out who, out of the two, killed Ashafunissa,” said a police officer. “Ashafunissa bore marks around her neck which indicated that a rope or cloth may have been used to throttle her. We are awaiting the post mortem report,” said Rajkumar Vhatkar deputy commissioner of police, zone VII.
