The crime branch on Wednesday arrested Munna Dubey, 25, who first shot at Gupta and then at Suman, and his aide Sirajul Shaikh, 35. They are, however, on the look out for their third accomplice.

Navi Mumbai police commissioner Ahmad Javed said, “An eyewitness told us that he had seen four people, two men and two women. They had some heated argument, following which Gupta was first shot dead near Jui Nagar railway station and Suman near the Millennium Tower in Sanpada.”

Police found Suman’s mobile phone from the spot apart from a train ticket from Uttar Pradesh to Mumbai. A SIM card belonging to Gupta was also found from the spot, which helped the police nail Dubey and his accomplice.

The commissioner said, “We have learnt that the accused and deceased were all known to each other and lived in the same locality — Sector 6 in Nerul. The other girl at the spot was Gupta’s cousin, his maternal uncle’s daughter.”

Javed said, “We have learnt that Gupta’s family was upset with his behavior and lifestyle. He had been involved in a fight with someone just a day before his death as well.” He confirmed that it was a well-planned murder but it was still unclear if Dubey had been paid money to kill Gupta. Police have recovered a sophisticated pistol apart from cartridges from Dubey.

“We are investigating how he got hold of such a sophisticated weapon for the killing and why they had to go to such a length to commit the murder. We believed there has to be something more than just Gupta’s behaviour for the killing. Why was the girl killed otherwise?” Javed said. The police, however, refused to confirm if the absconding accused was a woman, as sources claimed.
