The police are trying to verify if the clothes that have been found belong to the dead woman as this would probably help them take the investigation further.

The body was found on December 29 at a secluded spot where the Metro work is in progress at Model Town in Four Bungalows, Andheri (W). The matter was reported to the police after the locals found the body.

The Versova police registered a case of murder against an unidentified person and have sent the body for a post mortem.

The woman, who is in her late twenties, was found with her face smashed in with a rock. She had injury marks all over her body.

The police said the purpose of smashing the face was to make sure she was not identified easily.

The police had earlier speculated the possibility of the victim being raped before she was murdered.

However, the post mortem report ruled out rape.

“It is possible that she was murdered somewhere else and then the body brought to the spot and dumped,” said Kalpana Gadekar, police inspector of Versova police station. Police said investigations were on.
