Senior inspector Shripad Kale said the boy's father Samsuddin had on Friday registered a complaint with the Shivajinagar police after he received a ransom call. Samsuddin runs a grocery store.
Officials said Gafoor often visited Samsuddin's house. He told the police that the reason he kidnapped Muddasir was because he was unemployed and wanted to get rich quickly. Officials said Gafoor told them he thought no one would suspect his hand in the crime as he was related to Samsuddin.
Police said after kidnapping Muddasir, Gafoor kept him at a foodstall near the Maharashtra-Gujarat border in Biladi. The crime branch had put Gafoor's phone on scanner surveillance.
They then got Gafoor's girlfriend to call him and caught him when he came to meet her at Navi Mumbai. Muddasir has been rescued by the police and has been handed over to his parents.
