A day after a portion of Altaf building in Mahim collapsed, the police said they would examine whether illegal structural changes led to the tragedy.
“Every possibility behind the collapse will be investigated,” said Avinash Sonawane, senior police inspector, Mahim police station.
Residents have alleged that major structural changes made to the building led to Monday’s collapse. “Investigations are on to find out if the original structure was tampered with,” Sonawane said. The police will examine the building’s blueprint to ascertain this.
Officials are awaiting the opinions of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and the fire brigade on the cause. “We are waiting for the rescue operations to be over. We will take into account the views of the BMC and the firemen,” said a senior police officer. The police have registered a case of accidental death.
