Heavy rains during the past five days have claimed 34 lives in Maharashtra, a senior official said today even as the Met department has forecast heavy downpour in some areas of the state.

The highest number of fatalities has been reported from Ratnagiri (13), followed by Solapur (10), Ahmednagar, Nanded (3 each), Sindhudurg, Sangli (2 each) and Raigad 1.

Altogether, 583 houses have collapsed due to the rains, the official said in Mumbai.

The Met department has forecast heavy rains in coastal Konkan region and in central Maharashtra during the next 12 hours, he said.
