The incident took place around 1pm at the residence of Chittaranjan Desai, 23, who stays in a housing society located near Liberty Garden in Malad west, said the police.

The police further said that an unidentified person entered Desai’s flat by breaking the door latch, and stole cash and 23 tolas of gold ornaments estimated to be worth Rs2.3 lakh, from his cupboard. Desai was at work when the incident took place. When he returned home around 6pm, he found his door ajar. Suspecting foul play, he checked his cupboard only to find the valuables missing.

Desai then approached the police and lodged a complaint.

“We have registered a case of house break-in theft against the unidentified person. We will also question the watchmen of the building,” said R Prabhu, inspector of Malad police station.
