While the situation in Mumbai and other parts of the state remained peaceful on Saturday, as Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru was hanged, a close vigil is being maintained on sensitive areas following instructions by the Union home ministry.

Maharashtra has been put on alert owing to the similarities between the Guru execution and the hanging of Ajmal Kasab, one of the 26/11 attackers, in November last year.

Both Guru and Kasab were executed in complete secrecy.

According to official sources, all police stations in the state have been asked to increase patrolling in their jurisdiction.

“We have to be vigilant 24x7, and instructions have been given to keep an eye on any developments,” said Sadanand Date, joint commissioner of police (law and order), Mumbai.
